LAB[au] (Manuel Abendroth, Jérôme Decock)
METALAB // WEBSITE www.lab-au.com
Belgium 1999

The “Meta_lab” is an interactive graphic database designed as an hypertextural navigation system throughout theoretical writings, research works and architectural projects by LAB[au], laboratory for architecture and urbanism. Conceived as a general navigation system interconnecting dispatched web-sites it offers project previews (text+ images) and multiple accesses and reading forms. The combination and interconnection of different indexing forms, space – time – structure and concepts, the interface operates as an intertextual comprehension of the projects which can directly be related to a larger investigation on information structuring, display and access examining the semantic and spatial mutation of architecture by computation and communication processes. LIGHT_SCAPE(S). In the concept of the interface, the map navigator, exploits the possibilities of simultaneous display and information access offered by electronic media. The Internet site is conceived like an interactive card, an interface bringing together four navigation systems in one single screen, each one proposing a specific thematic understanding of the urban light planning project independently of their consultation role, the navigation windows display information relating to the chosen subject, evolving with each action of the reader. This process leads successively to a comprehension of the inter-connection between design method (displacement maps), the structural and spatial parameters of light (light_topography) and the dynamic or temporal parameters of light (light_urbanism). The navigation therefore exploits the potential of the electronic medium to develop an intertextual comprehension according to the relation of new design technologies within conceptual approaches.
