Earthscape
Italy 2000, 6’20”

“Earthscape” was created for the competition “Citta: terzo millenio”, (City:third millennium) within the framework of the Venice Biennial of Architecture 2000. 4 images/visions that contain an idea/plan for the city of the future. Earthscapes points out a sort of urgency and it represents an experiment in its attempt to reduce the complexity of a city to a simplifying and spectacular synthesis made up of 4 images. The smooth and scored space identified by Deleuze and Guattari continue to overlap and contaminate each other. The city’s smooth space is retroactively reconstructed by those who, outside the working conditions, build their own changing and self constructed living space (bidonville – slums). In “Earthscape” we tried to introduce the scored space and produce an interface with the environmental smooth space. In this way, in a city of the third millennium, we have imagined the elimination of the imposed limits, of the continual expansion of the city and the radical rise of individual mobility. We are not looking for the solution in the city, but within the landscape we provoke an interference between the two types of space establishing a hierarchy. In the city of the third millennium the smooth space dominates and organises the scored space that becomes an integral part of the smooth space. The movie “Earthscapes” extends and expands the idea of stereo-reality defined by Paul Virilio. It analyses the way in which architecture is part of these territorial phenomena, (technological, environmental, cultural) and it defines architecture as a void.

In 1997 Carmelo Baglivo, Luca Galofaro and Stefania Manna founded IaN+ with the objective of creating a meeting point between theoretical and practical architecture. The construction and the city, seen as an open and changing place of experiments, develop themselves at the same time in a repeated dynamic verification between theme and programme. The members of IaN+ have participated in a number of international competitions of architecture. They are now working on a laboratory for the University of Rome and a square in the city. This year they were invited to the urban laboratory exhibition, ARCHILAB 2000 in Orleans and to the Venice Biennial of Architecture.

Ma0/emmeazero was created in 1996 and it was first based on a plan of re-population in the public residential suburbs in Rome. The various skills within the group lead the members to work on architectural planning, and on the planning and making of multimedia equipment. Most of the group’s activities are based on national and international competitions and are also connected to the Stalker urban art laboratory. Most of the members of ma0 are members of this laboratory. Ma0 indeed is the operational ground for this laboratory.
