"ORIS"
Magazine for architecture and culture
Volume VI, number 29, 2004
Croatia

ORIS is a journal for architecture and culture, which has been published in Croatian/English and Slovene/English for six years now. It comes out bimonthly and it is sent to our subscribers but it is also available in bookshops both in Croatia and some other countries. Apart from publishing ORIS Arhitekst Publishers organise exhibitions and lectures of local and international architects.

Last four years we organised Days of ORIS, an international symposium which took place in Zagreb on the last weekend of October. Next year we are going to have the fifth Days of ORIS, which will be our small anniversary. So far we have had the following speakers at our symposium: Heinz Tesar, Alfred Berger and Tiina Parkkinen, Helena and Hrvoje Njirić, Cino Zucchi, Paulus Bernard de Bruijn, Frits van Dongen, Aleš Vodopivec, Thom Mayne, Alfredo Arribas, Dieter Henke and Martha Schreieck, Nande Korpnik, Kengo Kuma, José Antonio Martínez Lapeńa, Vinko Penezić and Krešimir Rogina, Wolf Prix, Mathias Klotz, Carlos Ferrater, Manuel Aires Mateus, 3LHD, Peter Noever, Shigeru Ban, Ole Terndrup, Patrik Schumacher, Friedrich Achleitener and Sadar Vuga arhitekti, Winy Maas, RCR, Medić and Puljiz, Vilhelm Helander, Itsuko Hasegawa, Wolfgang Tschapeller, Goran Rako, Zvi Hecker and Janez Koželj.

This year over 900 people attended the symposium each day (October 23 and 24, 2004 The symposium Days of ORIS has become a traditional event, which has crossed the borders of Croatia –we have had audience not only from Croatia but also from Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Serbia and Montenegro, Austria and Italy. The last lectures held by Wolf Prix, Shigeru Ban and Winy Maas attracted an audience of about 900 interested people each.

Important part of ORIS works are exhibitions. Idea ORIS is an exhibition of original sketches and drawings made by almost all the architects whose projects have been published in ORIS so far. This means there are 348 exhibits by architects from Croatia, Slovenia, Japan, Spain, England, Portugal, Chile, Germany, Austria, Italy, etc. As already mentioned, these are original sketches with unique value, and international galleries have already shown interest in hosting the exhibition. The introduction to the catalogue is written by Peter Noever, manager of the museum MAK in Vienna (Museum of Applied Arts).

[21nov2004]
Other exhibition connected with ORIS, is exhibition of original sketches of the architect and professor Neven Šegvić. Professor Šegvić was a charismatic personality of the architectural scene for the most part of the 20th century, and well known for his free-hand drawings, sketches and studies. I believe that all these events prove viability of the publishers Arhitekst and significance of the magazine ORIS on the cultural scene as well as the interest, almost hunger of experts and laymen for such events not only in Croatia but also in the region.
