ALDO AYMONINO (TEAM LEADER). Events platform in Athens

[in italiano] The metaphore of origami seemed to correspond to the idea of modification and unity in its various configurations. The object takes different shapes according to the modification of its formal configuration: from the basic status -when all the parts are laid completely flat on the ground- to the three dimensional origami ,when the movable parts are raised to create different figures. Practically, the events platform is designed to be used in several different situations:
- as an event platform, or
- as a place for the projection of the images with relative seats, or
- a stage with some part mechanically raised for the performances and lastly as
- a urban icon with its visual impact when all the parts are vertically raised to become a perceptual magnet.

[09feb2003]

Obviously, this urban origami will be a place for the events related with the olympics games not only the place of the performance but also a landmark to indicate the location of the events and a place where the visitors could get all the informations from the latest result of the Olympic event to be projected on the screen.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

The events platform is designed to comply with all the specific requirements illustrated in the competition regulations:
- all the elements are de-mountable and it is possible to transport, store and mount them in another location. So the structure is divided in various hand movable elements that are exstremly flat and light and can be stored easily. To obtain the smallest possible weight the structure is designed in carbon/epoxy, one of the lightest material that can be used;
- the system proposed has no foundations in the ground. So to resist wind overturning forces some parts of the structure are ballasted with lead pellets. These pellets can be easily removed for transportation;
- the system is designed to resist all the live loads required in the competition regulation, including dead weight and wind forces;
- all materials are re-usable and weather and time resistant;
- the floor finish is non-slip material and can be used by people with disabilities.

MATERIALS

The following materials were used in the design of the events platform:
- high strength carbon fibre/epoxy prepreg;
- high modulus carbon fibre/epoxy prepreg;
- airex 75kg/m3;
- aluminium;
- stainless steel AISI 316;
- lead pellets;
- white hellenic marble.

ITEMS DESCRIPTION

The events platform is composed of the following items:
(n. 1) main structure made with carbon/epoxy beams;
(n. 4) small origami (seats);
(n. 3) large origami; projection screen;
(n. 1) column for lighting/projector and electrical equipment;
(n. 1) column for origami deployment.

MAIN STRUCTURE. The main structure is composed of high strength (T300) carbon fibre epoxy rectangular tubes 120x60mm wall thickness 6mm.

SMALL ORIGAMI. The small origami are composed of hand movable elements (seats) and ballasting platforms. The hand movable elements are box like sections with a total thickness of 60 mm stiffened internally with 'C' stiffeners. All the structure is conceived in high strength carbon fibre (T300 or equivalent). These elements are clad with aluminium on their lower surface and white hellenic marble (5mm) on their upper surface. The ballasting platforms have the same structural configuration of the movable elements except that they are 120mm thick. Additionally, their upper skin is dismountable in order to permit their filling with lead pellets (without these lead pellets the structure would not resist the wind loads). The surface materials are the same as those of the hand movable elements. A hinge arrangement has been provided to permit the relative rotation of the hand movable elements between themselves and their rotation with respect to the ballasting platform. Devices have been incorporated in the platform and movable element design to absorb differences in site surface levels. The whole structure was designed to withstand its dead weight plus a live load of 7.5KN/m2 and a wind speed of 20m/sec when deployed.

LARGE ORIGAMI. The large origami are structurally similar to the hand movable elements of the small origami. All large origami are 60mm thick.

DEPLOYING SYSTEM

To deploy the large origamis so they can perform their assigned functions a column is used. This column is made from high stiffness (M46J) carbon epoxy (60 x 60mm wall thickness 6mm); it lies on the ground between the origamis when the structure is not deployed. Since this column is very light (14kg) it can be raised by hand. It has a sheave on the top through which a rope is passed. This rope is attached to a pulley system that is used to raise the large origamis (22kg/m2).

LIGHTING AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS

A lighting and electrical systems column is also incorporated in the design. This column is similar in design to the column used to raise the origamis except that it contains all the electrical and electronic equipment necessary to function as the events platform.
