THE CICCIO GROUP. Europan 7

This project has been submitted as entry at the Europan 7 competition in June 2003 by the CICCIO Group -Walter Aprile, Dario Buzzini, Line Ulrike Christiansenn, Karmen Franinovic, Eyal Fried, Daniele Mancini, Stefano Mirti– a group of students and professors dealing with the Interaction Design Institute Ivrea. Since that time, they have been accumulating numbers of experiences and experiments around the CICCIO, the Curiously Inflated Computer Controlled Interactive Object, whose the projects shown here, represents the very first prototype. All the work of documentation on the web, is based on a WiKi on-line collaborative environment, that can be reached at the following web address: http://www.interaction-ivrea.it/ciccio. This other address, on the other hand, go directly to the official wiki page of this project: http://zope.interaction-ivrea.it/inflatedego/InflatablePrototype1

PROPOSAL. We believe in the value of an architecture made of emotions, architecture is in fact the simplest medium to articulate time and space, to model reality, to make people dream. to use the competition in order to give our dreams a deadline, to force ourselves to face reality, taking the constraints as a main trigger to push ourselves more and more.
We chose Pescara as case-study because it perfectly fits our vision. an Italian city on the Riviera, tourism, seasonal activities: what happens during the long winter, when the city goes asleep?
What about a winter park, glowing bubbles, temporary use, sustainability, young people coming from all over Europe? Not forgetting the dogs (as required from the brief), the master plan and all the rest. To give life, excitement, desire, all year around...

In our proposal we define a new concept of River Park, using our inflatable network throughout the space. The waste is managed in an indirect way (the bubble network overlap on the different parts, without modifying them directly). The river park gets the network support (antenna + water & electricity box).
Then upon necessities, desires, events, the bubble-city can freely grow. The buildings in the area aren't restored or demolished, simply kept as they are, in order to become the perfect environment for our new world. With the same system, could be located the requested activities (the music town, the botanic garden, the kennels park). in few words: a house in the park, with different typologies of inhabitants.

THE STORY. In terms of conceptual approach to the competition we have to refer to our beloved Dutch guru, Johan Cruyff. In his seminal book: Ajax, Barcelona, Cruyff. The Abc of an obstinate maestro, he was able to frame the main conceptual issues developed in our competition entry. What to say? We just quote him directly: "...and that means you really were a bit of a strange if you look at idealism in professional football. Professional football means money. It means achievement. Idealism, of course, means loving beautiful football. And it means never in your life making concessions about one or the other. They are equally important. I don't think results and idealism are really opposite. They turn out not to be. I've said that from start. I am a bit strange. An idealistic professional, that's how you have to see it". This is our point. How to keep the poetry, without forgetting the competition brief. To put together the masterplan requirements and our spatial explorations. It looks quite difficult, but actually the difficult challenges are more reasonable than the simple ones. Because (and here we go with the second quote): "I never practice tricks. I play very simply. That's what it's all about. Playing simple football is the hardest thing. That's the problem of all trainers. Like a penalty. That's not a problem. The thing is that a penalty seems to be very easy, which is why it's very difficult". (Thank you maestro...)

"The joker dreamt he was in a place stripped of time and matter, of all thieves but one. What are you doing in my dream, he asked the thief. It is not your dream anymore, for I am the thief the thief dreamt he was in a place stripped of time and matter, of all jokers but one. What are you doing in my dream, he asked the joker this is a dream you will not steal away, for I am the joker."

Competition Booklet series.

You want a summary of the problems tackled the conceptual problems... oh my God... Problem number one is this fact that only 17% of prize winners actually get to build what they dreamt in their mind. This fact leads us to take a different approach. The joker and the thief (with some other friends) actually built their dream. Several prototypes, try, error, try again, improve, refine, take a picture, take two, go back and fix the fan... We believe in the value of an architecture made of emotions. Architecture is in fact the simplest medium to articulate time and space, to model reality, to make people dream. To use the competition in order to give our dreams a deadline, to force ourselves to face reality, taking the constraints as a main trigger to push ourselves more and more. We chose Pescara as case-study because it perfectly fits our vision. An Italian city on the Riviera, tourism, seasonal activities. What happens during the long winter, when the city goes asleep? What about a winter park, glowing bubbles, temporary use, sustainability, young people coming from all over Europe? Not forgetting the dogs (as required from the brief), the master plan and all the rest. To give life, excitement, desire, all year around...

We started from some shared thought on the theme of housing diversity. If Nicholas Grimshaw is able to make an inflatable skyscraper, why couldn't we address the housing theme looking to some very intriguing experiments of the sixties? In terms of strategic reflection, we agree on the assumptions as described in the brief. We live in a society where the sprawl rules, the car is everywhere, impossible to stop, but with quite lovely trunks. All around ourselves we can see this desire for new spatial innovations, demands for new lifestyles. In our understanding, the real challenge is the urban sustainability. Four keywords for our project: individual autonomy, diversity of social interaction, professional mobility, speeds of communication. With our proposal we try to address the strong demand for a new neighborhood social life, as well as suggesting new possible sets of values. We believe in a sprawl city completely transformed into a sustainable one, with ecological and urban foundation.
In a case like Pescara (given its nature of tourist-based economy), our proposal could be also seen as a strategic tool to put together economical value and desire. In terms of executable architectural project, we used the competition constraints in order to build a series of real prototypes, enabling ourselves to understand better the potentiality and the limits of our starting hypothesis. A new city for tourists and mobile professionals, using a radical typological approach. A housing cluster ready to host differentiated needs upon the strategic thinking of the local master-plan...

Competition Posters Series.
"The thief turned his back on the joker and made the place his own. He sat and he stood, he held his breath and filled his body with black air. He ate and he drank, he killed and devoured, he spread his arms and felt the warmth of the blood."

In the brief we found: "...we now want to work from, or nearby, to where we live, to invent new ways of social interaction, and to fill our free time with sporting and cultural activities without being obliged to travel great distances from our homes..." Isn't it our proposal perfectly fit to answer to your intriguing questions? It is an experiment in order to see if it is possible to foster new dynamism, to favor the spatial intensification of the social life that can take place within our bubbly worlds. Bubbly worlds conceived as new home/work interface, technologically high performance units. Another keyword is: Simpletech.

"The first one will do Just passing thru The second one needs more I've been here before I've been here before Wanna make me weak while you cry Not such a thing, till you die Gotta go I get high Gotta go I get high Deceiver deceived us And I deceived them Carry my troubles home Married with the humble."

The case-study area in Pescara is a classical example of urban sprawl. A long accumulation (without much logic), a variety of disparate intervention without much though for urban ecology. We can't fix it the overall mess, but we can suggest an idea of possible conceptual re-organization of the overall. In this strategic plot of disused and underused land, we add a very light layer of possibilities. Inflatable ones. We are working on the historical principles of town planning and traditional urban composition. The relevant thing is that upon our understanding, out of the XXth? century we consider our masters people like Constant, we cried when we read about New Babylon, Superstudio, Archigram and the design metaphors by Ettore Sottsass. Our mental (and physical) landscape enable mobility, while offering urban coherence and environmental quality (liberating and integrating natural space). With an incredibly simple network grid we are able to imagine a rational management of natural resources (water, energy). In terms of spatial-temporal strategy, a system like ours, works on a step-by-step process. Experimental prototypes, temporary events, camping like situations, all the way to the housing frame.

"Then a man and a woman came. They were in love, a smile on their faces. I am the joker, said the joker, welcome to my home. Isn’t it the most beautiful place you have ever seen? And the thief dreamt that a man and a woman came. They were in love, a smile on their faces. I am the thief, said the thief, this is MY home. It is the most beautiful place you have ever seen."

In our proposal we define a new concept of River Park, using our inflatable network throughout the space. The waste is managed in an indirect way (the bubble network overlap on the different parts, without modifying them directly). The river park gets the network support (antenna + water & electricity box). Then, upon necessities, desires, events, the bubble-city can freely grow. The buildings in the area aren't restored or demolished, simply kept as they are, in order to become the perfect environment for our new world. With the same system, could be located the requested activities (the music town, the botanic garden, the kennels park). In few words: a "house in the park", with different typologies of inhabitants.

"With you I can reach the moon, the joker said and put his hand against the wall. With you I don't need to reach the moon. With you I am on the moon with you I can reach the moon, the thief shouted and shouted and slammed his hand against the wall. With you I can make people believe they ARE on the moon, he screamed and said no more."

The old incinerator building and the space around are the best areas where to start our bubble-city experiment. In terms of cost the overall system (a first series of 24 bubbles) would be quite cheap. The overall networking (Internet connection, television antennas, broadband, water, electricity) would cost about 500.000 Euro. 24 bubbles (each bubble has a main cylinder + 3 smaller spheres) would cost 3000 Euro each (altogether 72.000 Euro). If you also count general works (park cleaning, road access, support buildings) we would then reach 750.000 Euro. Obviously, the system can start with a simple bubble, connected to the world in a much simpler way. In this case, the overall cost would be contained in 10.000 Euro.

"That night the joker and the thief woke up from the dream that they have dreamt. I want to tell you about my dream. Will you listen? I want to tell you about my dream too. I will listen. I dreamt I was in place so free I could not destroy. It was a dreadful dream. Now tell me your dream. I dreamt I was in a place so free even you could not destroy. It was a wonderful dream."
