CONCORSI DI ARCHITETTURA, DESIGN, MEDIA

2° international
HOME DESIGN COMPETITION

under the patronage of ADI and ICSID

1. Foreword

Clac s.r.l. - Centro Legno Arredo Cantù - is committed to the promotion and exchange of ìglobal designî in the companies of the wood-furniture-furnishing sector, through the union between the design and manufacturing sectors, offering support, providing technological, legislative and commercial information and displaying the results of recent and past prototypes, in publications and shows.

2. Objectives of the competition

The Interreg project, with the International design Competition as one of its primary means of actuation, intends to promote the interrelation between the areas of Como (alta Brianza), Sondrio and Varese and bordering regions (in particular, Switzerland: cantons of Ticino and Grisons), in an initiative which allows the meeting and exchange of experience between designers, companies, schools, operators in the sector and final users.
The programme is also aimed at giving young designers the opportunity to participate in placements in companies of bordering regions, in order to promote the mutual exchange of expertise and knowledge. The initiative is part of a wide-ranging strategy aimed at bringing greater awareness and dynamism to the wood-furnishings manufacturing sector, and at creating the basis for the development of more flexible and receptive ìsystem areasî than those traditionally existing in the Italian furniture manufacturing sector.
For this reason the competition is not limited to merely awarding the successful entries with prizes, but foresees the development of winning entries up to prototype phase to allow the designers to check and precisely define the project, the producers to experiment with new solutions and the potential final users to fully understand the planning idea and its working qualities.

3. Organisation

The competition is promoted and organised by Clac and supported by ICSID -the Internation Council of Societies of Industrial Design- and by ADI -Association for Industrial Design-. The Swiss partners are the CSIA, Centro Scolastico Industrie Artis-tiche in Lugano, and the DAA, the Department of Applied Arts at SUPSI (Scuola Universitaria Professionale della Svizzera italiana).

4. Theme of the Competition

Entrants are asked to treat the following theme:
A house for the third millennium.
Fixtures and furniture for new domestic environments.
The projects must therefore interpret new lifestyles, through the design of fixtures, of furniture, of components or finishes of interior or exterior borders or partitions- all of which may possibly be integrated with each other - which are qualifying elements of significant living spaces.
Particular attention should be paid to those aspects linked to spreading new technologies in production and home life and to the theme of environmental compatibility.
The manufacturing sector of reference is that of wood-furniture-furnishing, even though links with related manufacturing sectors (construction, plant engineering, etc.) are not ruled out. Is likewise given full liberty in the choice of materials.

5. Entry Requirements

The competition is international, and is open to: professionals (Architects, Engineers, Designers etc.), both individually and in groups; students (those attending schools of Architecture, Engineering, or Industrial Design; students at Academies, ISIA, Art Schools, university-level or post-graduate institutions etc.), either individually or in groups; schools in their role as institutional bodies (classes, sections, departments, etc.).
Students must present a valid certificate demonstrating that they attend a school.
Persons directly or indirectly involved in the organisation and administration of the competition, and members of their families, may not participate in the competition.
The projects must be original and unpublished; they should be accompanied by a declaration, signed by the author of by the group leader, which certifies the authorship and originality of the entry presented. In the same declaration the entrant should indicate which category is being entered for (Professional or Student) and confirm acceptance of the rules of the competition in their entirety.

6. Prizes

The overall prize money is of 50,000 Euros.
From the entries received, the Jury will select those which it considers most deserving of recognition; for each of the categories (Professionals and Students), the following prizes will be awarded:
1st prize 7,000 Euros
2nd prize 5,000 Euros
3rd prize 3,000 Euros
The Jury will also have a further 8,000 Euros available to assign to recipients of Honourable Mentions.
The Jury reserves itself the right to distribute in a different way the prize money, that anyhow will be fully awarded.

In addition to prize-winners, the Jury may select other projects which they consider deserve to be exhibited as part of the competitionís closing show.
This show will also mark the beginning of the relations with those companies which will be responsible for realising the prototypes of the winning entries and possibly of some of those receiving Honourable Mentions.
The prize is considered as payment for a commissioned work; it represents the recognition of personal merit and an encourage-ment in the interests of the collectivity, and does not in any way imply the surrender of intellectual rights over the project to Clac or to the company who should eventually produce its prototype.
The prize-winners and authors of those projects selected for the show will each receive a certificate.
The Jury's decision is final.

7. Special Prize for project presentation

The Jury will assign, in the Student category, a special prize of 4,000 Euro to a project which, apart from dealing with the general theme of the competition, presents and communi-cates the project in the most original way. Its decision is final.

8. Presentation of Entries

The project must be presented in the following form:
a) an illustrative table in UNI A2 format mounted on lightweight rigid backing.
b) one or two technical tables in UNI A2 format mounted on lightweight rigid backing.
c) one table in UNI A2 format mounted on lightweight rigid backing containing an illustrative report including a description of the planning criteria, the materials used, the technology required for its production etc, and photographs of the model.
Extra marks may be awarded to those entries including documentation with 3D plans on CD-ROM, which allow an integrated approach to the engineering of the project for the production of prototypes and communications development.
The number, type and format of the above items must be strictly adhered to; failure to comply may lead to exclusion from the competition.

9. Identification and Anonymity

Entries to the competition are anonymous. No project entered must be signed by the author or bear any distinguishing marks.
If planners participate as a group or as a school, they should nominate a group leader.
The name and address of the entrants and a motto-title for the project should be contained inside a sealed envelope enclosed with the project; this envelope should also contain the declaration of authorship as laid down in art. 5.
No other markings should be made on the envelope or plans. Each project, at the moment of its arrival, will be given an entry number by an Intermediary who will not be involved with work of the Jury. This number, preceded by the letter P or S according to the category of the entry (Professional or Student), will be marked on all the plans and envelope and will thus allow identi-fication of the authors after the Jury have come to their decision.
All projects correctly presented to the Competition Secretary will be passed to the Jury for examination.

10. Criteria of Judgement

The Jury will express their judgement of the entries in relation to the following requirements:
1) The innovative and original nature of the project in strict relation to the theme of the competition.
2) Reliability in terms of performance and costs, technical feasibility of the planned objects.
3) Reference to appropriate technologies, suitable for up-to-date manufacturing processes widely used in the sector.
4) Conformity to international regulations regarding ecology, safety and use.
5) Quality of the plans.

11. Rights of Use. Project Bank

The author or authors of the entry are to all effects owners of the related rights of use. It is the responsibility of each entrant, if he should so wish, to protect his project by applying for copyright or patent registration or trough the design depositing service managed by ADI (Design Register) before entering the project in the competition.
The projects will become, unless the entrants prohibit such use, part of the Clacís project bank, thus being made available to any furnishing manufacturers who may be interested in their use according to professional rules and regulations.
The presence of the Project Bank does not in any way mean that Clac holds exclusive rights to use the projects, but represents only a means for their diffusion with the consent of the planners, who remain free to use them at any moment as they see fit.
The relationship between the companies and the authors of the prize-winning and other entries are possible only after the competition has ended and on the basis of a direct relationship between the companies and the entrants, which will relieve Clac of any mutual obligation.
The ADI can offer a full contractual consultancy service, if necessary, to anyone requesting it.

12. Addresses and closing dates for receipt of entries

Those interested in entering for the competition are requested to present their plans to the Competition Secretary by 30 June 1999. The plans will be accepted provided they are postmarked on or before this date and provided they arrive at the secretaryís office no more than 10 days after this date.
The entries should be sent 'free port' to the Competition Secretary.
For postage purposes, each package containing entries should be marked ìelaborato destinato ad un concorso internazionale, nessun valore commercialeî (entry for an international competition, no commercial value) and should also indicate the category for which they are entered (Professional or Student).
If entries are sent from outside Italy, they should indicate a value for customs purposes. This should not exceed the intrinsic value of the materials (paper, card) used in the realisation of the project. The Competition Secretary is not authorised to accept any entries which require him to pay customs, postal or courier charges.

The organisers reserve the right to exhibit the projects also on other occasions.

14. Return of entries

The participants who wish their entries to be returned must make a formal request, and must collect them personally at CLACís premises, or ask them to be sent at their own expense, within 12 months of the Juryís decision.
