LG Electronics International Design Competition: Creating a New Age - U.S.E.R. First Design LG Electronics has announced the theme for their 1999 Design Competition, "Creating a New Age - U.S.E.R. First Design". Promoted by LG Electronics and sponsored by the Consumer Union of Korea and Korea Institute of Industrial Design Promotion, this biennial event will award over USD 44,000 in total prizes. Theme. The world is undergoing huge changes, now that we are approaching the end of the 20th century. The materialistic virtue which has been dominant in the past century is fading out,as mental and intellectual satisfaction is being more and more highly appreciated.Studies have indicated that the 21st century's digital technology will cause certain changes in the paradigm of human life. With this background, there is no doubt that the new design value for the 21st century has to reflecttheessence of natural, mental and physical demands of human beings.In order to explore a new type of design approach which can lead the 21st century's living culture through the establishment of the new century's virtue, this year's competition is proposing 4 user-oriented key words: User friendly, Solid, Expressive and Reflecting lifestyle. Applying these keywords to the new life scene will provide us with clues for the theme. User friendly: design that understands users' needs and contributes to ease of use Solid: design that provides long-term reliability with unchanging image Expressive: design that conveys true emotions through unique expressions and vividness Reflecting lifestyle: design that leads human lifestyle in the future information society Jury. The international jury will include: Prof. Christopher Frayling, UK; Prof. Patrick Whitney, USA; Mark. D. Dziersk, USA; Kazuo Kimura, Japan, and Chul-Ho Kim, Korea. Exhibition. All entries that have been selected by the judges will be exhibited form October 27-November 2, 1999 at the Seoul Arts Center. Deadlines. The deadline for registration is May 21, 1999. Entries must be received no later than June 16, 1999 (entries received after this deadline will be accepted only if postmarked before June 16, 1999).
