Tilley Design Competition


Competition Aims:

• Offer up and coming designers a showcase for their creativity and talent
• Look for new design solutions and designs that will fit the lifestyle of the new
millennium traveller
• Encourage young designers to explore the versatility of new materials


Judging Criteria:

• commercial value balanced with creativity
• innovative use of materials and features
• attention to detailing
• presentation
• universal appeal


Submission Guidelines:

Each entry must be mounted on one 24" x 36" or two 24" x 18" rigid board (3/16" foamcore or gatorboard only). Nothing should project more than 1/4" from the surface of the board. Visual content should be appropriate to the design project (e.g. photographs, drawings, sketches) and clearly depict the project. All visuals should be securely affixed to one side of the board only. The name of the designer(s), institution and any reference should appear on the back of all boards. A separate written articulation statement of the premise and of the criteria for the project and its selection must be included with each submission. All entries must include technical drawings (for construction purposes). Entries will not be returned. Employees of Tilley Endurables, DX and/or their families are not eligible to enter. Tilley Endurables and/or the DX are not responsible for lost or stolen entries. Entries must be submitted to the Design Exchange, 234 Bay Street 4th Floor, Toronto-Dominion Centre, Toronto, ON, M5K 1B2.


Final Guidelines:

Finalists will be required to make the garment(s), models, objects, prototypes or any other three-dimensional samples as represented by the design drawing selected to display for the Tilley Endurables exhibition. Designers should also include 2 photographs or slides of the project for promotional purposes. The names and photographs of the contestants, their sketches and their objects may be used for promotion by Tilley Endurables Inc. The best three projects from the finalists will receive the first, second and third prize. Other finalists will receive a Certificate of Merit. Each contestant agrees to respect the decisions made by the jury which are final and not subject to appeal.

Awards & Prizes:

Entries will be judged by a panel of distinguished professionals including judges from the Design Exchange, Tilley Endurables and design academics. Judging will take place December 1, 1999. Winners will be announced January 12, 2000.

FIRST PRIZE: $5,000.00
SECOND PRIZE: $3,000.00
THIRD PRIZE: $2,000.00

• Winning entries will be displayed in an exhibition at the Design Exchange in February 2000. First, second and third prizes will be awarded at a Gala Reception in February 2000 at DX (date to be announced).
• Tilley Endurables Inc. will have exclusive option to produce all of the designs submitted in whole or in part to the competition. Production and/or promotion of the work will be done in terms of a mutual agreement initiated prior to December 31, 2000 between the creator and Tilley Endurables Inc.
• All contestants by submission declare that their entry is unique and the design in whole and in all parts is owned by them alone.
• All contestants indemnify Tilley Endurables and DX against third party claims.
• The competition will be supported by a promotional campaign by Tilley Endurables Inc. and the Design Exchange.
