Personal Mobility in 2050
The International Car Design Competition 2000

Organizer: CAR STYLING
Sponsors: San'ei Shobo, Tokyo Auto Salon Association (TASA), Tools Corporation

What will personal means of movement be like in the year 2050? What will global society be like? What about transportation systems? Resource and energy problems? These are all difficult issues, and no one can offer any certain responses. We think it would be more agreeable if entrants gave us their optimistic predictions for how they hope the future will be.

Syd Mead, that master of future design illustrations, said "I draw as a rehearsal for living in the society of the future".

Rather than see the future pessimistically, we must build a bright future for the next generation. How should we do this? What sort of designs will the means of personal transport that can be used 50 years from now have? This theme puts your vision of the future into question.

Open to: All. Entrants will be divided into two categories: the Student Division and the General Division.

Categories The student division is for those who will be registered in university or college at the time of the final deadline for preliminary screening; others will be entered in the general division. If the applicable category is not clear, the contestant will be entered in the student division.

The competition will begin with preliminary screening, followed by the final judging. There is no need for advanced registration.

Works will not be returned, whether they pass preliminary screening or not. Make copies for your personal records and to be used when making models.

Final judging
Those who have passed the preliminary screening will compete in the final judging with three-dimensional models. The models should be scaled to about 1:10, and affixed to bases measuring a maximum of 250 x 500 mm. The models should be made in industrial clay or the like. They can be in any color. The parts should be fixed on the models when the models are sent in. For participants from outside Japan, the model can be photographed and color prints or color copies sent in instead of the actual model. The photographs should be cabinet size (120 x 168 mm) or larger. There should be at least six prints or copies, showing the model from six angles: front, side, back, diagonal front, diagonal back and top. Please indicate your name on the back of the photos.
Models will be returned to contestants after the end of the Tokyo Auto Salon (17:00 to 17:45 January 9, 2000) at the exhibition hall. They will not be returned at any other time. Please take photos of them for your records.
