Domus BBJ Design Competition

Theme of the Competition

Editoriale DOMUS, in collaboration with Professor Seferis, is promoting a competition to bring up new ideas for the interior of the BOEING BUSINESS JET (BBJ). Based on the Boeing 737-700 New Generation, the BBJ responds to market demand for an ultra-long-haul business airplane. With its 75 m2 of interior cabin space, the BBJ is able to please every customer – be it a head of state, the CEO of a corporation, or a wealthy individual. Moreover, this private jet can serve as an efficient office with fast world-wide communication capacities, a high-quality meeting room, a luxurious personal
suite, or a combination of any of the above.

The BBJ’s exceptionally large cabin area opens up new perspectives for innovative interior designs. To encourage original new ideas, this competition is purposely left open to what revolutionizing interior designs might be submitted. Contestants can choose their subjects – for example new lay-out for the whole cabin, improvement of private space, individual items, refined work-space, low noise level acoustics, advanced climate
control, versatility of the interior, best use of water, or even interior interchangeability for the time sharing concept of the jet.

Due to the interdisciplinarity of the subject, the Domus BBJ Design Competition will require the setting-up of work groups capable of expertly handling technical details of materials, safety and structures, as well as matters relating to aesthetic appearance, functionality and the attractive design of new aircraft interiors.

Competition's Guidelines

Admission

This competition is characterized as "upon invitation" and is held in two phases. Contenders shall be chosen by the Admittance Committee according to compliance with the requirements of the competition.

Participation in the first phase is open to everybody. But due to the complexity of the subject, interdisciplinary participation, in groups or teams, is strongly recommended. These teams, associating engineering design, interior design, product design, and business process design, with at least one student or recent graduate, should be able to handle technical details of material, safety, and structures, as well as aesthetic design, functionality and cost efficiency.

A group or team leader should be nominated with responsibility for his team and will be the person of reference regarding the competition’s organizing body.

Schedule

Teams applying for admission are requested to submit a dossier that includes participants resume, a selection of works, pictures of electronic format (-jpg or -gif, width not to exceed 400 pixels, 72 dpi resolution, file extension must be used), 24x36 mm slides or 18x24 cm photos, and a descriptive report on the team’s basic project idea (not exceeding 5400 characters in length). Entry deadline is August 31, 1999.

Dossiers and admission forms
http://www.bedr.org/domusbbj/en/Registration_form.rtf   must be sent by e-mail to domusbbj@bedr.org (e-mail size, attached files inclusive, is limited to 1000kb or one megabyte) or to Editoriale Domus, via Achille Grandi 5-7, 20089 Rozzano (Mi) Italy. The use of Electronic mail will be greatly appreciated. Editoriale Domus will not accept any entries, which require paying customs, postal or courier charges. The Admittance
Committee, who will select the contenders qualifying for participation in the second phase, will evaluate these dossiers.

Selected participants will receive complete public notice by October 1st, 1999. All final projects must be delivered by March 31, 2000.

With the beginning of the second phase on October 1st, 1999, new parameters containing technical data, etc. will be made available to the qualified contestants.

The final selection of the winning projects will take place in June 2000, and the Committee will announce the results at a Press Conference followed by a ceremony for the awarding of the winning prizes.

Specific criteria of judgment for the jury may include the following fields:

- innovative and original nature of the project in strict relation to the
theme of the competition
- reliability in terms of comfort, utility, costs, and technical feasibility
- conformity to international regulations regarding aircraft safety
- quality of the plans

Participation in the competition implies the unconditional acceptance of the present rules, and of the committee’s decisions.

Publication of Results

The results of the competition will be published simultaneously in the periodicals Domus and Volare and others, as well as over the competition’s WEB site. The results will be announced also at the press conference.

Return of Competition Material

The participants who wish their entries to be returned must make a formal request, and must collect them personally at Domus premises, or ask them to be sent at their own expense, within 12 months of the jury’s decision. After these dates, the organizing body cannot be held responsible for the conservation of the material.
