International Architecture Competition
FOURTH EDITION 1998-2000

THE VALUE OF IDEAS

With its customary attention to innovation and the evolution of market trends, Ceramica CASALGRANDE-PADANA has formulated the idea for this competition aimed at promoting and showing the value of the most signiftcant Italian and international works produced by architects and designers in everyfield of application. The spirit of the iniziative covers two aspects: on the one hand, to reward those projects which have best interpreted the forma and needs of contemporary architecture with the aid of "GRANITOGRES" and "MARMOGRES" and on the other, to develop a closer and more fruitful relationship between producers and users. By contributing their creativity, architects and designers become , in effect, an active and essential link in the chain of the industrial production process.
Strengthening this relationship, and creating a continuous exchange to give rise to an enriching virtuous circle, is now, therefore, the prime philosophy of Ceramica CASALGRANDE-PADANA for developing and o ffering products which make our habitat more comfortable and more practical.

THE STRENGTH AND SHAPES OF CREATIVITY

"GRANITOGRES and MARMOGRES" can be used for works both indoor and outdoor flooring and wall-tiling. Strength: GRANITOGRES and MARMOGRES combat the harshest physical and chemical stresses with the outstandingly hard surface of porcelain ceramic which renders them impervious to attack; and this is achieved without any sacrifice in terms of beauty or liveability of the environments in which it is used. GRANITOGRES and MARMOGRES thus offer all professionals the opportunity of implementing technically reliable projects, which remain totally resistent over time. Creativity: GRANITOGRES and MARMOGRES support and enhance all the creative needs of designers, through an infinite variety of colours, surfaces, sizes and decorative elements, allowing them to create stylistically innovative and aesthetically valuable solutions.

REGULATIONS

PURPOSE OF THE COMPETITION

- The Ceramica CASALGRANDE-PADANA GRAND PRIX is an international event to recognize and reward professionals who, through their work, have used and highlighted unglazed porcelain ceramic tiles under the GRANITOGRES and/or MARMOGRES trademarks.

CONDITIONS FOR PARTICIPATION

- The following may take part in this competition: architects, engineers, interior design professionals, individually or as a group, private and public technical studios, designers and interior decoration studios provided that they have contributed to projects using GRANITOGRES and/or MARMOGRES either as wall or floor coverings of any kind. For group participation, a group leader shouid be indicated.

WORKS ACCEPTED IN THE COMPETITION

- Each competitor may present one or more works. lt shall be his responsibility to obtain the permission of the customer or owner to present and use the work and relative materials.
- Projects created with the use of GRANITOGRES and/or MARMOGRES in any public or private construction field may compete. Projects may be for interiors or exteriors, new construction, remodelling or renewal of existing structures.
- For the fourth GRAND PRIX, works realized in 1997-1998-1999 or 2000 may compete.

REGISTRATION

- Registration in the Ceramica CASALGRANDE-PADANA GRAND PRIX is free
- Documents required for registration are:

. a completed entry form (here enclosed or to be required);
. a typed presentation illustrating the project along general lines (max 60 lines);
. at least 3 (three) colour slides sized 6x6 cm. illustrating the work;
. any other documentation which highiights the overali quality (not oniy architecturai but also functional) of the project submitted.

- Deadline: all submissions must be mailed by July 31, 2000; the stamp cancellation date will be taken as proof of compliance with the submission deadline.
- The documentation and photographic material shouid be adequately protected for mailing. The competition organizers decline any responsibility for the condition of material as delivered.
Unless otherwise notified, material is understood to have arrived in good condition.

USE AND PUBLICATION OF THE PARTICIPATING WORKS

- The materials presented for the competition will not be returned.
- The act of registering for the competition authorizes the organizers to use the photographic material for publicity purposes in the manner and form they deem most suitable. Such use shall identify the work's country, author and purpose.
- The participants hereby warrant that the organizers of the competition shall not be subject to any claims arising from such publicity use. Furthermore, the organizers shall be exempt from any and all responsibility towards third parties.
- The participants shall have the right to use any prize or recognition assigned them for publicity and promotional purposes provided such are correctiy quoted.

JURY AND ASSESSMENT'S CRITERIA

- Prizes will be assigned by an international jury made up of six members selected from well-known figures in the architectural and design fields, plus the President of Ceramica CASALGRANDE-PADANA, who will chair this jury. Each member of the jury will assign each work a score and this decision shall be impartial and irrevocable.
- The assessment's criteria for forming the classification will be as follows:

. technical innovation
. installation
. functionality
. creativity

- To guarantee absolute impartiality, if a member of the jury should have a direct interest in any given work, he shall declare this interest and abstain from judging said work. His score in this case shall be repiaced by the average of the scores assigned by the other members of the jury.
- The decisions of the jury shall be binding in matters of assigning awards and prizes. Participation in the Ceramica CASALGRANDE-PADANA GRAND PRIX automatically implies acceptance of the Rules and Regulations outlined here. Anything not covered in these Rules and - Regulations shall be governed by ltalian law.

The Court of Reggio Emilia is solely cognizant in all matters of controversy.

AWARDS AND PRIZES

- Total prize money offered is Lit. 54.000.000.
- The following prizes will be awarded:

. N. 3 cash prizes of Lit. 10.000.000 (+ Gold Plaque) to the first placed
. N. 3 cash prizes of Lit. 5,000,000 (+ Silver Piaque) to the second piaced
. N. 3 cash prizes of Lit. 3,000,000 (+ Bronze Piaque) to the third piaced
for projects judged as most interesting in each of the following categories:

. Floor and wall coverings Shopping centers and large commercial buildings
. Floor and wall coverings Public and institutional buildings - Industrial buildings - Other types of projects
. Floor and wall coverings Residential buildings

- All registered participants will receive an interesting participation prize.
- Ceramica CASALGRANDE-PADANA will inform the winners by Registered mail.
- The prizes will be presented to the winners or their representative at a special Gala event. All participants will be notified of the date of this Gala event by 2000. The winners will be guests of Ceramica CASALGRANDE-PADANA.
- The works may be published in a volume edited by Ceramica CASALGRANDE-PADANA. All participants will recive a copy as a gift.
