ar+d emerging architecture, international award

The Architectural Review and d line international (the distinguished Danish
architectural ironmongery firm) are launching an annual international award
to celebrate the talent of a generation of architects as yet largely
unrecognized. We are looking to celebrate excellence in executed work
ranging from buildings and interiors, to temporary structures, exhibition
and product design. The ar+d award will have total prize-money of £10 000
annually, and winning schemes will be specially published in the AR.

ELEGIBILITY
It will be open to all architects and designers whose qualifications are
recognized by their national accreditation organization, provided that they
are 45 or younger. The age has been chosen on the basis that many cannot
develop an original vision before that time, either because of the long
education and training period, or because of lack of opportunity. With the
latter in mind, entries will be accepted from people working for others,
provided that a principal in the employing office provides written evidence
guaranteeing that the work is that of the entrant(s). Groups or
partnerships will be eligible to enter, provided that all members are of
the right age, and that they are all named in the submission.

PRIZES AND PUBLICATIONS
Prizes will be given in several categories. So that the range of entries
can remain as wide as possible, the categories will not be determined
beforehand, but decided on by the jury. Besides buildings, entries on
interiors and on manufactured products (for instance furniture or light
fittings) are encouraged.
There will be an overall prize of £5000; its recipient will be chosen from
the winners of the individual categories. All winning schemes will be
published in the AR, and so will others chosen by the jury. The overall
winner will receive a trophy by Knud Holscher, who has long been the
principal designer for d line.
Entrants may make more than one submission if they wish.

JURY
The jury will be:
Billie Tsien, of Williams & Tsien, New York
David Chipperfield, of David Chipperfield Architects, London
Massimiliano Fuksas, of Massimiliano Fuksas Architetto, Paris, Vienna and Rome
Theo Bjerg, Professor at the Danish Royal Academy
Peter Davey, Editor of the AR

ENTRIES
Entries should be mounted on not more than two A2 sized boards, which
should carry drawings, a brief written description (in English) and some
photographs (in either colour or black and white). The material must be
capable of reproduction by the normal four colour printing process. The AR
reserves the right to ask winners for further material for publication
purposes, once the jury has made its decisions.
Entries should be properly packaged and clearly marked ‘ar+d’ on the
outside. They should be sent to THE ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW, 151 ROSEBERY
AVENUE, LONDON EC1R 4GB, UNITED KINGDOM.
To ensure anonymity, all entries must be accompanied by a sealed envelope
which should contain the names of the entrants. On receipt by the
organizers, both envelope and boards will be given an identical individual
number. After the jury’s decisions, the envelopes of the winning schemes
will be opened and the names read.

TIMETABLE
Entries should be received by The Architectural Review by 6 September this
year. Evidence that an entry has been despatched by that date will be
accepted. The jury will meet shortly afterwards and make its decisions.
Prizewinners will quickly be informed. Results will be specially published
in the November 1999 AR.

A prize-giving ceremony will be held in London in October.
