The Fresno Historical Society is sponsoring an open two-stage competition to select a winning design and architectural team for its new Central California History Museum. The new History Museum, which will be built in downtown Fresno and which will provide an in-depth and comprehensive look into the history of the Central Valley region and its people, is estimated to have a total project cost of approximately $17 million (including exhibits) and will include approximately 45,000 SF of new construction. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2001.

Fresno, located in the heart of the California's Great Central Valley, has a history that is inextricably linked to the land and its development into one of the richest agricultural regions in the world. From the time Native Americans populated Central California to the present, the relationship that people have with the land, with water and with each other, form the basis of a rich, culturally-diverse history. It is the stories associated with the land and the people who settled it that will be the focus of the new museum's permanent exhibit. The new museum will be sited in the city's downtown area, adjacent to the Fresno Metropolitan Museum. Together, these two museums and other nearby cultural institutions, will create a cultural district that promises to make the area a destination for resident and visitor alike.

This competition will be conducted in two stages. The first stage will be open to all architects, museum designers, and other design professionals who are licensed to provide the requisite professional services in the State of California. Association of out-of-state architects with California-licensed architects (preferably those familiar with the Central Valley's environment) is permitted. All first stage submissions will be anonymous. A http://www.valleyhistory.org/html/jury.html Competition Jury comprised of design professionals will select the five most promising submissions to become Finalists for the second stage of this competition. Each Finalist team will receive an honorarium of $7500.00 toward their competition costs in preparing a monochromatic study model of their design.

Each Finalist team will have an opportunity to make an oral presentation of their design to a body consisting of the Jury, Museum Board, Museum staff and interested community members prior to the Jury's recommendation of a winning design. The Museum Board will make its decision on the winning design based on recommendations of the Jury and input from staff and the community. The competition winner selected by the Board will have the opportunity to negotiate a contract for the requisite professional services to implement their winning design with the Museum. Bill Liskamm, FAIA will serve as the Competition Advisor.

The http://www.valleyhistory.org/html/schedule1.html competition schedule indicates that http://www.valleyhistory.org/html/regform.html egistration is now open. A registration fee of $100 is required of each competitor. The http://www.valleyhistory.org/html/fs-kit.html Competition Kit will be posted on the Museum's website in October and a briefing and site visit are scheduled for mid-November. First stage submissions are due late in January 2000, and second stage submissions and Jury presentations are scheduled for March 2000.
