JUBILEE
YEAR 2000 Parish Church & Shrine for Our Lady of Guadeloupe Type: Open, international Registration Deadline: November 29, 1999 Submission Deadline: November 29, 1999 Open to: All Entry Fee: $35 US Awards: First Prize is contract for architectural services Jury: John Burgee, Carol Krinsky, Rodolfo Machado, William Brown and Francis Manion The focus of the competition is to address the present and future needs of Hispanic Catholics in particular, and the church as a whole as she looks to the future. The program will consist of a church for a weekly congregation of 500 people, with occassional gatherings of up to 1,000; tornado shelter; accomodations for meetings and classes (minimum of four rooms at 120 persons each); cooking and dining facilities for the congregation in close proximity to the church; washroom facilities with access by campers; a small residence; parking; and a strategy for expansion. The site is largely wooded, and consists of a rectangular six-acre parcel. It is surrounded by farmland. Since the location is approximately mid-way between Fort Wayne and South Bend, the parish will also serve as a diocesan center for Hispanic celebrations and a shrine for devotion to Our Lady of Guadeloupe. A unique aspect of this church facility is that it will receive limited mid-week use. The project may be a phased development, and it is to be built using as much volunteer labor and community involvement as possible. A video of the community life of the parish is included in the program package.
