A
New Museum in Antwerp International Architecture Competition A new museum will be built in the city of Antwerp : the ‘Museum aan de Stroom’. The museum will be built at the ‘Hanzestedenplaats’, the junction between the city and the ancient harbour, near the Schelde. To this effect, the city council of Antwerp will be organizing an international architecture competition. The architecture competition is organized in two phases. Phase one is open to any design teams that may be interested and the final date for entries is fixed on 11th October 1999. The entries must be submitted both in Dutch and in English. Out of these entries the jury will select five candidates who will be invited to work out their projects in detail. The closing date for the second phase is fixed on 1st March 2000. The results will be shown to the general public at the Hessenhuis, a municipal exhibition centre. There, an exhibition will be organized, titled ‘Musea voor een nieuw millenium’ (Museums towards a new millenium), about twenty-two museums which have been built over the last decade. The jury, next to representatives of the principal, the Flemish Property Developer, and some Belgian architects, will also consist of some foreign curators (Christopher Brown, Catherine David, Jan Debbaut and Michèle Périssière) and Richard Rogers, an English architect who made some designs for the new Palace of Justice in Antwerp. The new museum combines the collections which are currently displayed at the Vleeshuis, the Nationaal Scheepvaartmuseum, and the Volkskundemuseum. These museums can now be found in historic buildings, which do no longer comply with the contemporary museum standards. Thanks to the integration of the three collections, the history of Antwerp in terms of cultural metropolis, economic centre and harbour, can be told in an exciting way.
