ASHRAE Student Design Project Competition You are invited to enter the 2000 ASHRAE Student Design Project Competition...an opportunity to have your project judged with those of other students throughout the world, win cash prizes and make valuable career contacts. ASHRAE, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, is a technical society dedicated to improving the quality of life through the advancement of the arts and sciences of heating, refrigeration, air-conditioning and ventilation, the allied arts and sciences and related human factors. ASHRAE sponsors this design project competition to recognize outstanding student design projects, to recognize outstanding student design projects, to encourage undergraduate students to become involved in this dynamic profession, to apply their knowledge of practical design and to promote teamwork. Categories The 2000 ASHRAE Student Design Project Competition focuses on the design of a two-story educational building to be constructed on a medium size college campus in Greenville, South Carolina. The purpose of the building is to provide learning spaces for the students and office spaces for the faculty. The Student Design Project Competition teams may compete and be evaluated in any or all of the following categories. Click on any of the following categories for the respective design and evaluation criteria: I. Architectural Design II. HVAC System Selection III. HVAC System Design The HVAC system selection project groups will concentrate on determining the best system for the application, while the HVAC system design project groups will perform a detailed design for a single type of system. Both groups will prepare their designs using CADD generated architectural plans provided by ASHRAE, unless they are working with an architectural project group that will give them this information. The architectural teams will use the site plans and criteria provided by ASHRAE to generate their building designs including the architectural program for the spaces describing relevant information on building use and function. Mechanical contestants are strongly encouraged to read the Architectural Program for relevant information on space functions and occupant densities. Contestants may utilize SI or Imperial units of measure in all calculations and documentation, but must be consistent in units chosen. DEADLINE MAY 1, 2000 Note: The 2001 contest information will be available in September 2000. Awards First Place $1500 for each first-place team plus a representative from the first-place team in each category will receive free transportation, 2 nights lodging and up to $100 in expenses for attendance at the January 2001 ASHRAE Winter Meeting in Atlanta where the award will be presented. Second Place A representative from each team in each category will receive free transportation, 2 nights lodging and up to $100 in expenses for attendance at the January 2001 ASHRAE Winter Meeting in Atlanta. The representative from the first- and second-place winning teams in each category is encouraged to participate in a Poster Session at the 2001 ASHRAE Winter Meeting.
