The 2000 Design Engineering Awards

Honoring excellence in Canadian design;
Recognizing innovation in engineering and industrial design

In a competition that puts as much emphasis on engineering achievement as it does on aesthetics and honors industrial Systems equally with consumer products, the Fourth Annual Design Engineering Awards program puts Canada's very best designers, engineers and technicians centre-stage.

The Design Engineering Awards competition is open to engineers, designers and technicians who worked on consumer products that were introduced to the market or industrial equipment or Systems that were put into operation during 1999. The design work must have been performed in Canada. Entries can be submitted by individuals, groups or companies. Entries and the entry fee must be received by noon, Thursday, June 1, 2000. The entry fee is $100.

Awards will be made in two categories:

CONSUMER/END-USER PRODUCTS: Typically, these are stand-alone products bought by a customer for private use. Retail sales outlets are the typical channel of distribution. Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards will be made.

INDUSTRIAL/COMMERCIAL EQUIPMENT AND SYSTEMS: This category focuses on equipment and/or Systems designed to enhance an organization's operations. The typical customer is a business or other organization, with distribution typically handled through direct sales, agents, or distributors. in other cases, the business may have designed the system for its own use. In cases where a product is marketed both to consumer and commercial/industrial customers, it should be entered in the consumer category. Software IS not eligible for the competition, since it is a published, not manufactured, product.

The winners will get more than recognition and national publicity for their innovation. In both categories, Gold winners will get $4,0O0, Silver winners will take home $2,000 and Bronze winners will receive $1,000. As well, honorable mentions may be named, each receiving $500. Each winner and honorable mention will receive a certificate attesting to their success, and will be featured in Design Engineering magazine. They will also be publicized in other media. Winners will have the right to use the Design Engineering Awards logo on their products, identifying them as winners of the 2000 competition.

The awards will be presented special at a gala reception in Toronto on September 18, 2000 at the Design Exchange, the centre for design and innovation.
