Ideas Competition

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) is pleased to announce that it is sponsoring an international, single stage competition to provide architectural and urban ideas, inventions and images for a national site of
great symbolic importance to Canada.

The principle objective of this competition, named Place Time and Symbol, is to generate a rich fund of ideas for the redesign of a high profile section of downtown Ottawa that has been the topic of extensive political and public discussions. The competition invites interested Canadians, and the global architectural community to celebrate our national identity by developing a creative vision for a significant site in our Nation's Capital.

"This is an exciting project for the RAIC and for Canada", says Eliseo Temprano, Architect and President of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. "We feel that it is essential to engage the Canadian public in the future planning of this site through an honest, transparent approach that involves the best ideas from across the country and around the world."

The selected area comprises a three-block area in the centre of Ottawa, with an emphasis on the middle block that faces Canada's Parliament Buildings. This block, bound by Wellington, Queen, Metcalfe and O'Connor Streets, currently has several vacant city spaces and is considered ideal for a study leading to both urban design and architectural ideas.

"The time has come to think outside the box and to allow the creative minds in the global architectural community, along with the Canadian public to develop alternative solutions for this site of exceptional national significance", says Honorata Pienkowska Roseman, Architect and Professional Advisor to the International Ideas Competition. "Although the winning entries will not be incorporated into an immediate development plan, they will no doubt stimulate thinking in decision-making circles and help in creating a vision for this location."

The International Ideas Competition is open to all architects and multidisciplinary teams that include at least one architect, with a first prize award of C$25K, and an additional C$30K to be shared by 2nd Place, 3rd Place, and Honourable Mention winners. The public will be invited to choose "Le Prix du public" (Public's Choice Award) through voting during the exhibition to be held at Ottawa's City Hall.

The announcement of winning entries and the display of all proposals will take place during the RAIC Festival of Architecture 2000 to be held in Ottawa from May 11-13.
