Architectural Models

IaN+

The model is a play or it is rather a disposal of urban plays.
John Hejduk

The model of architecture is situated across an itinerary of desire and research. It is something that pretends to disclose.... a destiny. It is prevision and utopia... zone of suspension, a true and proper territory where configurations and assemblage are formed as half way between sculpture and architecture...
Germano Celant

[in italiano] The models that are collected in this exposition consists in a reduced scale reproduction of planed achieved projects, but the major part of them can be defined as spatial concepts, three-dimensional diagram of architecture that determines at the same time the accumulation and the stratification of new ideas.
Each model is in continuation with the one that precedes it, collecting its essence and re-proposing it through different spatial dispositions.
Planning in this mode means first of all to play, and to find the desire of recomposing essential elements to its proper architecture. For us, using models became praxis. Since the beginning, our initial projects were considered to be the direct evolution of bi-dimensional diagrams to which is added a dynamical component that underlines the ontological problems concerning the identity of the architectural project.

In all our exposed work, the project for the House of Goethe and the project for the extension of the Mies van der Rohe foundation in Barcelona remained to us as time passes by, unique (singular) programmatic references that are capable of restructuring our language in relation to a real context. These projects consider architecture as a part of a whole that the architect should learn to control. The vertical elements of the house of Goethe are found in the horizontal sequences of the Mies van der Rohe's foundation and they create a modular grammar that constitutes the generic elements of the project of IaN+.

The model, is not exclusively a method to represent a building before its realisation, but an anticipation of a reality that is in continual evolution and is used as a true and a proper creative matrix, that is often capable of reporting an idea in a allegorical mode with abstract dimensions.
The model has an operative role that is hidden in the succession of the choices that are made progressively. Those choices define an open field of experimentation and thought.
Architecture is converted into a personal property that cannot be transferred by whom who weighed with his own hands one of these objects. The model represents the reality but also indicates a process in action that prefigures more solutions and resolutions in the field of the real. The possible and anticipated solutions are capable of altering the state of things emphasising new point of views: it is simultaneously all or nothing... the building (as a subject) and its negation (as an object) signifies the less possible in the expression and the more possible in the potential, in the mutations; a space that will lend itself to everything that we would want using little means.

The projects through models and their matrix gain a new dimension. They constitute a landscape that is animated and that is open to interpretations that differentiate them from the building which is going to be realised. The use of transparent materials for example, indicates a precise will, the attempt to expose beyond and to concede to the visual experience a wider (larger, additional) possibility. The transparency makes visible the structure that is intend not as a concrete object, but more like a system of relation. In the last analysis, the true and proper structure of the architectural work (project) is what it has in common with all the other architectural work and the model that serves to emphasize it.

"Architecture can not be only infrastructure, the structure of a skeleton without content, an excavated solid. Instead, it must be conceived with a synergic activity within the grids and within the intersections in which it is inserted". (Germano Celant)
