Dismissed at first out of fear, then largely exploited without the necessary critical control, the new visualization technologies have ended up being “thrown” into the big box of “tools”, to some even that same box opened by Leon Battista Alberti, the box of the “instruments for the study and the realization of the idea”. But there is no doubt as to the existence of a major break that significantly involves the teaching scenario itself: perspective, in a way, lets itself to be interpreted as representational model. The numerical image is essentially a “script”, because it is generated by abstract linguistic operations. Not a metaphorical language, but in the true sense of the word. And while we are witnessing a real merger between image and language, image and model, another change is pressing and a much more important fusion is generated: the one between image and distance.

Distance meant as interdependent relation between idea-model-production. Distance that today is intended also and above all as the privileged place for the development of the communication and information flux. Such a change today imposes a “re-thinking” of the contents to be “transmitted” to whoever wants to get access to the sites of development of architecture, because using the computer structurally, as an element of research, may bring about a crisis “on principle” in any given discipline.
