Metapolis, MEDIA HOUSE PROJECT, SPAIN 2001, 39''

The “Media House Project” is conceived as a strategic alliance between the consortium Things That Think from MIT Media Lab, oriented primarily towards the enabling technology, and Metapolis and the Fundació Politécnica de Catalunya in Barcelona, oriented towards the design of informational spaces, in order to develop new concepts and technologies for inhabitable environments. This project is a test-bed for migrating information technology out of conventional computers and into the rest of the world, seeking to literally build computers out of the components of buildings so that the logical intelligence in a structure can grow along with its physical form. The enabling capabilities that Media Lab is investigating include techniques for distributing the work of central computer servers over large numbers of simple unreliable processors, and a dramatic reduction in the cost and complexity of providing Internet connectivity so that it becomes available to the simplest components in smart spaces.

Metapolis is a network for research, development, diffusion and teaching founded in Barcelona in 1998 with the objective of stimulating understanding, debate in relation to the new logics that define architecture and the territory.

Curators: Silvia Banchini, architect, works in Barcelona collaborating with Metapolis. [w +4] Architetti Associati (Maurizio Bonizzi, Giovanni Franceschelli) is a permanent observatory and records a different lifestyle by "ecological" operations. Laura Cantarella, architect and photographer, has been working since 1997 with digital photography and quicktimeVR technology, being involved in communications campaigns, setting up exhibitions and stage design projects. She collaborates with Metapolis, Barcelona and is a member of esplorativa.it, a multidisciplinary team in Torino.
