David Ellsworth, Stephen O'Dell, Hazlo Por Cuba, USA 2001, 13'33''

Hazlo por Cuba is a thirteen-minute experimental documentary shot in Havana, Cuba that explores street life within the context of Havana's diverse urbanism and architectural styles. The film's title derives from one of the ubiquitous government billboards found throughout Cuba and translates literally as “Do it for Cuba”. With increasing tourist development, Havana faces the inevitable consequences of urban change. The film aesthetically documents daily Havana life as it unfolds in the shadow of a rich architectural heritage, revealing the human relationships that give meaning to the rapidly changing architectural landscape.

David Ellsworth
has made short films that have appeared at various international festivals. He is currently working on an experimental documentary about the boathouse community on the Mississippi River in Winona, Minnesota. Director of Shoebox Films and Co-Producer of Hazlo por Cuba, Stephen O'Dell is a practicing architect residing in New York City. He made his first trip to Cuba in 1996, and has returned each year photographing the architecture of Havana and Cuba. He has contributed works in periodicals and several photographic exhibitions on Cuba in New York. He intends to publish his photographs on the modern architectural heritage of Cuba as well as continuing to pursue film-making opportunities for Shoebox Films productions.
