Jonathan Lott, subject place, USA 2002, 1'54''

It is a place because of the episodes which occur there, not merely because of the objects which define its space. Materials themselves are inert and inanimate but, when they become connected with our experience (visual, acoustical, tactile) then a place begins to emerge from an otherwise static positioning of materials. It is here where our perception of the material/spatial composition is critical. As architecture loses its relationship with the human body, it is reduced to a mere visual field; it remains inanimate object-space. The video subject place is a study of how the human body and materials may interact as a demonstration of the architecture’s events.

Jonathan Lott was born in 1976. He is a student of architecture at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. Currently he is participating in an International Program in Florence, Italy. This experience has allowed Jonathan to travel throughout Europe and explore many of today’s architectural conditions.
