Rafael Lozano-Hemmer (V2_Organisation), Body Moves Relational Architecture No. 6, SPAIN 2001 13'05''

Body Movies was the sixth in the series of installations in public space that Rafael Lozano-Hemmer has designed for cities in Europe and America. These interactive interventions in Madrid, Linz, Graz, Mexico City and Havana have been exploring the intersection between new technologies, urban space, active participation and "alien memory". As part of its 2001 program "Grounding", V2_Organisation presented Body Movies, in collaboration with Las Palmas International Centre for Art, Image and Media Technology. From the 31st of August until the 23rd of September the Schouwburgplein square was transformed by the projection of huge interactive portraits on the facade of the Pathe Cinema building. Thousands of portraits taken on the streets of Rotterdam, Madrid, Mexico City and Montréal were shown using robotically controlled projectors located around the square. However, the portraits only appeared inside the projected shadows of local passers-by, whose silhouettes measured between 2 to 22 meters high, depending on how far people were from the powerful light sources placed on the floor of the square.

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer born in Mexico City in 1967, received a B.Sc. in Physical Chemistry from Concordia University in Montréal, Canada in 1989. He lives in Madrid, Spain. His work has been shown in over a dozen countries, including the Istanbul Biennial 2001 (Turkey), ARCO art fair (Spain), Bienal de la Habana (Cuba), Film+Architektur Biennale (Austria), Museo de Monterrey (México), the Musée des Beaux Arts (Canada), European Media Art Festival (Germany), Ars Electronica Festival (Austria) and SIGGRAPH'93 (USA). His writing has been published in “Kunstforum” (Germany), “Leonardo” (USA), “Performance Research” (UK), “Telepolis” (Germany), “Movimiento Actual” (Mexico), “Archis” (Netherlands) and other art and media publications.
