NEXT architects, The image of Metropolis, THE NETHERLANDS 2001

The way the world is shrinking is a much-discussed topic. Nowadays it takes no more than a matter of hours to fly round the world. Air traffic makes it possible for anyone to reach anywhere in the world within 24 hours. To construct this present document we selected over seventy subjects, things that we expected to encounter in each of our cities. These subjects were divided into a number of different themes: daily life, movement, recreation, the cityscape, power, contact, identity and outcasts. Besides photographing these items, we conducted short interviews and collected magazines. We bought newspapers, postcards and the latest local hit singles. We climbed the highest towers and explored underground nightlife. We wandered through shantytowns and gated communities. We ate worms in Johannesburg, frogs in Bangkok, turtles in Shanghai and grasshoppers in Mexico. We were white in Johannesburg, rich in Mumbai and poor in Tokyo. For 125 days, 24 hours a day, we were citizens of the world. Twenty-six cities in fourteen countries, 125 days, 246,083.2 km, 74 flights and, most significantly, 12,500 slides later, we had circled the world.

NEXT architects (Bart Reuser, Marijn Schenk, Michel Schreinemachers and John van de Water) is a young office, based in Amsterdam. NEXT architects sets urban and architectonic development as a starting-point. Projects are characterized by new typologies that appeal to contemporary developments. Motive behind many projects is mobility and attainability: on different scales the relationship between urban development and movement is explored. This exploration, both wide and specialized, finds its results in a broad spectrum of projects. It has no ultimate destination: there is always a NEXT project.
