privileggio_secchi, IMPRONTE, ITALIA, 2002, 8'00'' Which are the imprints that media society leaves on the material terrain of the city? What turns an inhabited territory into a city? What is our current urban condition made of? The mastery of public space as the physical place for contact and exchange is the main topic in this video. A design research investigates new means of conceiving public space interpreting those various forms of polarization between the individual and the collective sphere which are distinctive of contemporary living. The assemblage of images produced on various design occasions gives an idea of a city which is built "from below", starting from the body and from its relationships with the material world, starting from the imprints that daily gestures leave in physical space, and it proposes the necessity to reconstitute the material sense of collective space within a culture that is dominated by the media but which paradoxically founds its own judgements, actions and contradictions on body values. Nicolò Privileggio (1964) and Marialessandra Secchi (1966) graduated in Architecture in 1991. They are both Dottore di Ricerca (Phd) in Architecture and Urban Design and Visiting Professors at the Politecnico di Milano. They worked with Bernardo Secchi (Milano) and in 1994 they established their own office in Milano. The work of privileggio_secchi's office is mainly concerned with research on the contemporary city condition and it has been published in the volume 5tudi (Dedalo, Roma, 2000). They have received awards in several design competitions (Pistoia 2001, Grenoble 2000, Lorient 1999, Rovinij 1998, Rovereto 1998, Milano 1998, Padova 1998, Thessaloniki 1996, Pescara 1992). Their projects have been presented in several exhibitions. |
