Florent Rougemont, One day in Gaza, THE NETHERLANDS 2001, 2'56"

In Gaza, colons who represent 20% of the population use 80% of the available water. That's something you only hear on the radio, not on TV. Gaza is like a strange TV show broadcast on a daily basis, a stage for the everyday life of a war whose commonplace images are defused of their emotional content : repetition of similar scenes never really explained. These researches are meant to be read as a means to a non-figurative information system based on data rather than emptied emotions and superficial binary identifications to terrorist or victim. Tracking daily clashes and traces left by the territorial layering of the historical background counteracts televisual images of a Gaza strip emptied of any sense of temporality and historicity. It gives way to a modulated landscape in which layers hunt each others in an entropic algorithm. The flexible territorial pattern of contamination based on the occupancy rates during the past looks for solutions towards the historical recording of extensions and retractions. The layering of traces may lead to suitable territorialisations which would be more like an unavoidable mixture.

Florent Rougemont (1973) graduated from the Architectural School of Strasbourg in 1998 and has collaborated with several offices in France and in the Netherlands since 1999. He participated in various competitions, among which: The City: Third Millennium for the Venice Biennale in 2000, Architecture, Image and Emotions and Amphibious Living. The video Living Architectures was presented during for the 5th International Festival for Architecture in Video in Firenze.
