Erno van Stuijvenberg (Zwarts & Jansma Architects), NIEUW STADION AZ ALKMAAR, THE NETHERLANDS 2001, 2'30''

Zwarts & Jansma Architects were commissioned by Meerschip development company to design a new multifunctional stadium for football club AZ in Alkmaar. In their design the stadium is surrounded by various spaces with commercial purposes, while the hollow spaces underneath the stands are used for activities connected to the stadium, which appeal to the spectators. Therefore, the stadium will also be used on days when there are no football matches. Between the stadium and the surrounding large-scale retail shops, a street with a transparent roof is created. This street encircles the entire stadium. Several meters above ground level, a concrete covering is constructed. Underneath this covering, there is a large parking space for both cars and bicycles. One enters the parking area through a ring-road around the stadium and leaves it via stairs and lifts leading into the inner street. This inner street will become the "natural heart" of the complex, bustling with activity.

In 1990 Moshé Zwarts and Rein Jansma established a partnership. With this step they formalized the co-operation which had already existed for several years.
Zwarts & Jansma Architects method is based upon rational architecture, which everybody can understand. Their attention is focused on making clear and practical objects, and integrating architecture, installations and constructions. In many cases (depending on the type of construction) this leads to architecture with a somewhat technical appearance. The firm is characterized by highly qualified employees and has a broad portfolio of both small and big projects.
