darò&darò, Nomadi nello Spazio, ITALY 2002

The carpet as an archetype of the floor, the horizontal projection of the dwelling in which the desert nomads’ lives are spent. The horizontal plane is metaphorically launched into space by means of a film obtained by mounting fragments from “2001: a Space Odyssey” and images of real life inside the International Space Station. The fabled flying carpet of “The Arabian Nights” becomes a spaceship and is related to the sci-fi images conceived by Stanley Kubrick in the 1960s as well as with the more advanced reality of our times. It is a low-tech installation, deep in the belly of the Ospedale degli Innocenti, whose least celebrated architectural facets are exploited and revisited as an archaic condition of nomadism against a future of extra-terrestrial explorations.

The design office darò&darò A.C.A. was born in Rome in 1998 on the initiative of Bruno and Mattia Darò. It connects at one with Alenia Spazio, developing an ongoing professional relationship that sees the office design its stands for international fairs. darò&darò is mainly interested in executing ephemeral architectures and in developing image projects since it believes in the value of temporary construction and in its relevance. Executed stands have been presented at the most important international fairs (Futurshow in Bologna, Telecomp in Cairo, SMAU in Milan, IBC in Amsterdam, IAF in Rio de Janeiro, I.S.S. in Washington) where they received important official awards. The studio also worked for IBM, Telecom, Enel, ASI, ESA, RAI. We would like to thank Alenia Spazio for according usage of the film and Euphon S.p.a. for supplying us with the equipment necessary for the projection.
