DOSARCHITECTS. Residential tower in Dubai Marina

[in italiano] Inspired by other iconic buildings throughout the world, Our vision is to create a new identity for the ever expanding city of Dubai, a space for vibrant dynamism; inspiring and defining for the future of the city. Significant to this development is the core concept of an entirely original, active, sustainable and mixed use urban tower. Our vision is one of warmth and humanity supported by the pillars of futuristic modernity, a natural coexistence; a place to truly live in. A glimmering beacon of light and shadow, reflecting the most beautiful of timeless landscapes, this tower is a world away from the imposing arrogance of jagged edges and metallic severity so present in much modern architecture. Sand dunes are eternal, comforting and almost sensual, giving a feminine aroma to the most masculine of architectural genres.

[13feb2006]

The tower creates a link between our precious origins and traditions with an inspiring vision to a future where technology and design, shape a space where the well-being of its inhabitants is paramount. The challenge was to be able to find a design that translated immediately the values of the brand concept. To this end we have concentrated on creating a recognizable shape, texture and colour to unite the threads which make this tower a true BRAND. We wanted to find a shape that is beautiful and reassuring at the same time. The Infinity Tower is oval, a universal shape of comfort, an eternal cocoon of maternal protection and nurturing. The oval is also the perfect shape for the climatic elements of Dubai, both the heat and the wind are tamed by the cocoon sphere. Its aerodynamics also means there is less tension absorbed by the tower's structure.

Ethical-aesthetics is our inspirational goal; we want the community to identify with the values of the Infinity Tower while being inspired daily by its existence. The envelope of the tower has been designed to protect without enclosing: its aesthetic appearance and functionality are the product of its direct relationship with the surrounding natural environment. Its mass and thickness give inertia to the building, as well as thermal resistance to temperature fluctuations in Dubai. Due to the very high summer temperature and oppressive humidity levels (particularly near the coast) comfort is difficult to reach by only using natural ventilation. Other passive strategies can be adopted to minimise the use of air conditioning and other active devices with great advantages for the occupants' health, as well as reduced running costs and overall impact of the tower on the environment. Its geometry makes the building almost self-shading to all the glazed elements, whilst still allowing openings to enjoy the external panoramic view. Our aim was to achieve a self shading and temperature stabilising façade. Its colour comes from the sand of the dunes and like these plays with the radiation of the sun to assume a gradient of tonalities. Lighter when the radiation is higher and darker where it is lower. Environmental sustainability is essential to the philosophy of the Infinity Tower.

There exists good potential for the collection of solar energy throughout the year from the East and West façades using vertical PV cells. High sun angles in the summer reduce the amount collected by vertical cells. For this end we have designed diamond shaped solar panels that will provide up to 25% of the total energy consumed within the tower. The Tower takes its energy from nature by harnessing the most cutting-edge technology and combining both elements in an aesthetic manner. Shimmering in the sunlight they provide us with clear, pure, clean energy - a constant reminder of the beauty of nature. Rather than imposing the inputs from the environment as pure constraints over the design process we used them to stimulate innovation and help us define the main elements of the building. The orientation and oval shape of the tower seeks to minimise solar gains and reduce structural wind loads. On the south façade the sun in very high in the sky, especially in summer, which makes it easy to control with a minimal overhang in the cladding. The east and west facades are more critical because of the lower sun angle and, because of this, we created and oriented an elliptical tower with less façade surface to the east and west sides. In this system, the actual parking floors ramp all the way up from the 5th to the 15th floors, providing a total of 560 parking spaces (56 cars per floor).
