Bezirksgebäude Zürich
ETH Zurich
1998, (8')

This Project was developed in collaboration with the institute for the preservation of monuments and sites in Zürich. Built in 1913, the original building design of Pfleghart & Häfeli Architects contained a very precise color concept that had as a main color a rather dark, ash-like red which had an relevant influence on the overall lighting situation. During renovation works in the 1950's, the original color concept was removed and everything got painted white to brighten the spaces. The 1998 renovation included thinking about restoring the original polychrome color concept. Discussing possibilities revealed that only the simulation and a working model could help finding decisions about possible color concepts applied to the structure. The simulation includes a staircase of three floors and the adjacent corridors and all the ornaments that had been applied to doorframes and ceilings to preserve that scale in the imagery.
Working sessions included recoloring parts on the fly and checking for the visual impact to the corridors and staircases. The final versions were optimized for realtime walkthrough and projection in the Visdome. The taped version has been rendered frame by frame but shows the same quality as the realtime model
