The increasing need for high end visual simulation led the ETH to form a special interest group for scientific visualization. Participants come from a wide interdisciplinary field of research facilities, merging disciplines as medicine, geology, mathematics, chemistry and architecture. Major work location for this group is the cupola of the ETH for which one of the largest projection cave in Switzerland has been planned. With a projection diameter of about 10 meter and a height of around 4 meters, many technical, acoustical and lighting problems had to be solved.
The design decisions and technical changes for the space have been continuously monitored in a virtual model. For the final stage, major concern was the distribution of light within the dome, since the working spaces needed to be operational in parallel to a presentation on the lower floor that required dimmed light. Integrating light distributions according to IES specifications and rendering the space with the settings enabled us to control the space very precisely.
The resulting model was optimized for realtime walkthroughs. The video sequences were generated frame by frame but show the same quality as the realtime model.
