Rios Vazios
Vìdeo Graphics, Brasil 1998, 4'47''

The video Rios Vazios (Empty Rivers) is a study of the most important in Ribeirao Preto, a rural city in the state of San Paolo. The river in Ribeirao Preto was one of the principle reasons of intervention of the modernist movement in the twentieth century that used external models as the most effective approach to deal with the river and the surrounding area. The managing staff that developed a plan for the area in question, used the river in order to resolve the problems of occupation and transformation of that entire urban area. The alteration of the river resulted in floods, the occupation of part of the highway and part of the territory surrounding the river, large refuse dumpings and a general degradation of the basin. The video is a way of interpreting, through the lens of contemporary Brazilian thought, the potential of damaged area as well as an instrument to converse directly with inhabitants of the zone, showing the cohesion of it. Yolanda Cipriano is completing her studies in architecture with an emphasis in art direction. Carlos Eduardo Sacagnhe graduated in architecture in December 1998 and is currently a researcher in social building and construction. He has also begun a specialization in morphology and urban design.
