Richard Copans
Le Centre Georges Pompidou
Les Films d'Ici / La Sept ARTE / Le Centre Pompidou, France 1997, 26'

Paris needed not only a new modern art museum, but also a library, a music center and a design center. The president Pompidou decided to unite these spaces in one building in the center of the capital, on the Beaubourg platform in the place that in the middle ages was call the court of miracles. Piano and Rogers conceived an open space in the city and due to the flexibility and transparency of the space and the fusion of activity, it could serve as a meeting place and a place for the circulation of information. A building conceived as a "gigantic mecca" adjacent to a public square which echoes onto the street to the variety of persons and to the absence of a programmed activity. The film explores this city in the city and compares the ideas of the architects with the reality of the center today.

Richard Copans was born in 1947 and studied at IDHEC. He is the founder and coordinator of Films d'Aujourd'hui since 1984. In addition, he is a producer of full-length films as well as documentaries and a director of photography. Since 1992, he has edited with Stan Neumann, the series Architectures seen on the French-German channel Arte. Since 1998 he has worked on the series Les Mots de l'Architecte, that rather than presenting a personality or a monograph, instead renders the basic concepts of architecture in a manner more familiar to the public at large.
