Raivo Kelomees
tokyo.ee
Estonian Academy of Arts, Estonia 1999

Even if time is invisible it's expressed by space. This work is in fact dedicated to the relationship among time, direction, duration considered as completely subjective parameters. The space of a city and the geographical areas are perceived through the significance given to them. The significance is then realised as stories, History or facts. Kelomees' Tokyo imaginary shows an urban space impoverished in significance: it's Tokyo without the compulsive arrangement of the Japanese culture; it's a set of abstract systems, graphic and auditive textures. This Tokyo could be re-maned using the typical Esthonian suffix "ee" of the surname of the author.. What kind of place could Tokyo.ee be? No place since the limit is given by a full-stop among suspended words in the more general question of temporality. These images could have been filmed everywhere because the city they show becomes a sort of mythic city; the audience 's expectations fight against a meaningless reality.
