Savvas Sarafidis, Angelica Solis
New York Mediascapes

Completed in collaboration with Angelica Solis, this video serves as an introduction to the project Fallen Skyscrapers, and it explores the way in which the image of New York has changed with time. The image of New York was developed and projected by diverse media techniques that, consequently, helped characterize the city. From the earliest military maps to films and finally to the Internet, this video constructs a linear journey through time. The final assemblage of the cinematographic trailer expresses metaphorically the interruption of this chronological trajectory by means of a vertical crossing: the fall from the top of a skyscraper into the underworld.

Savvas Sarafidis works as an architect and designer in New York after a bright beginning of his career in Athens and the United States. He initiated his studies at the National Tech University in Athens and he later pursued a masters degree in the Science of Architecture and Urban Design at Columbia University in New York. Sarafidis has always pursued his interest in the problems related to urbanism, either regarding public spaces or the construction of large residential complexes in urban areas like Manhattan.
