Una mostra, un Seminario di studi e una rassegna videodocumentaria propongono una rilettura degli esiti del “Piano incremento occupazione operaia. Case per lavoratori”, noto come Piano INA Casa o Piano Fanfani. L’attuazione di quel piano negli anni Cinquanta ha rappresentato un’importante esperienza per la costruzione e la ‘ricostruzione’ del territorio italiano, per la definizione di una nuova immagine della città, per il miglioramento delle condizioni abitative di migliaia di famiglie, per l’affermazione del ruolo di architetti e urbanisti. I quartieri costruiti allora rappresentano oggi significative testimonianze di politiche, culture e tecniche dell’epoca.

Label design, CD inserts, and inlay cards for musical legends such as the Rolling Stones, David Byrne, Lou Reed, Aerosmith, and Pat Metheny mark Stefan Sagmeister's international career. After studies at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and a Fulbright scholarship to the Pratt Institute in New York, the designer, who was born in Bregenz, founded Studio Sagmeister Inc. in Manhattan in 1993. His numerous awards include four Grammy nominations for music packaging. Sagmeister's cover designs visualize musical contents; through traditional techniques such as typography and processing, they capture the public's attention. The MAK exhibition documents Stefan Sagmeister's creative and innovative potential after his one-year sabbatical, which he has dedicated to experimental design projects. The exhibition features Ando's most accomplished projects of the past twenty-five years, ranging from one of his first buildings-Row House, Sumiyoshi, a small residence in Osaka (1975-76)-to an important recent commission-the François Pinault Contemporary Art Foundation, Paris (2001-), which will be the largest undertaking of his career to date. Ando's design for the exhibition installation features a sequence of pristine, freestanding walls. Positioned according to a mathematical analysis of the volumes of the exhibition galleries, Ando's walls are as much minimalist sculpture as they are utilitarian exhibit supports. As Ando's walls divide the space, they unite it by orchestrating a rhythmic architectural promenade for the visitor. Tadao Ando: Architect was organized by the St. Louis Art Museum. The installation at the Clark Art Institute was designed by Tadao Ando Architect and Associates.

The countless works in the exhibition will illustrate Ponti's pursuit of a total design approach in which architecture, interior design and product design merge seamlessly - a world of design. Besides scale models, drawings and photographs of his main architectural designs, the exhibition will include a wide selection of his furniture, tableware, fabrics and ceramics. The Pirelli Tower in Milan, the luxurious Villa Planchart in Caracas, the furniture for Cassina, the glasswork for Venini, the legendary 'La Cornuta' espresso machine and his work as the editor of the trendsetting Domus magazine: Ponti's multidisciplinary talent has created milestones, as though effortlessly, in every discipline. Cette exposition-rétrospective, créée par arc en rêve centre d’architecture et montrée en avant-première à Bordeaux, rend compte de la démarche très particulière d’Anne Lacaton et de Jean Philippe Vassal, deux architectes bordelais dont l’œuvre fait référence au niveau international de la création architecturale. Ils se distinguent par leur attitude professionnelle qui relève d’une véritable éthique : résister à l’envahissement des signes, offrir un espace ouvert à l’appropriation jusqu’à l’effacement de l’intervention de l’architecte. Leur approche « minimaliste » explore les contraintes et les transforme en énergie créatrice du projet. Ils optimisent tous les moyens à disposition sans à priori – le budget, les techniques, les matériaux, l’environnement naturel – avec le souci premier de servir le bien-être de ceux qui habiteront leurs réalisations. La force de leur langage réside dans cette recherche obstinée de réponses précises, non définitives, sans bavardage esthétique. Les solutions proposées sont souvent radicales, d’une extrême simplicité, toujours empreintes d’une grande générosité.

The exhibition is organised by The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and presents a selection of more than 300 of in all 1100 books and 100 related works which The Judith Rothschild Foundation has donated to MoMA. In Russia, beginning in the 1910s, avant-garde artists and poets produced a revolutionary body of work that was seminal to the modern movement and unlike that found anywhere else in the world. Artists such as Natalia Goncharova, Mikhail Larionov, Olga Rozanova and Kazimir Malevich revitalized visual imagery at the same time that their poet colleagues reinvented the written word. One of the fruits of their collaborative efforts would be a new form of artist’s book. After the Revolution of 1917, artists sought to adapt their vocabulary of forms to the new society, believing that they could play an important role in the fulfillment of its goals. The second section of this exhibition, entitled Transform the World!, illustrates how Suprematism and particularly Constructivism transformed Soviet graphic design. El Lissitzky and Aleksandr Rodchenko were among the most accomplished practitioners of this style, collaborating with major revolutionary poets such as Vladimir Mayakovsky. In the later 1920s and early 1930s, Constructivist design principles spread to all types of publications, including architectural journals and even trade catalogues and government reports. In 1934, Stalin decreed that only Socialist realism would be tolerated in the arts. Thus, a remarkable period of avant-garde production that began in 1910 with a bold assertion of creative freedom, came abruptly to a close.

"I don´t want jam, not workshops and school, just school" - this is how Mies van der Rohe outlined his concept for the Bauhaus when he was appointed its director in 1930. Everything not directly connected with this educational goal was set back; the main emphasis - which until then consisted mainly of the teaching of a methodical approach - now became strictly object-focussed. The rapidly political and economical changing of the depression of the early thirties also contributed to the changes at the school. Nevertheless Mies remained faithful to the original goal of the Bauhaus: to design the "great building" in all its details. The exchange of the directors was more than a simple change in the management, it meant the restructuring of the school, including a shortened curriculum and a focus on the teaching of architecture. This came in two parts, the first consisted of studies of building types, especially the small dwelling, and city planning under Ludwig Hilberseimer, the other being a seminar directed by Mies himself. He developed the "Hofhaus" ("courthouse") especially for his classes as a teaching tool, which should train his students in the understanding of material, space and nature - his prerequisites of any architecture. These houses should do more than just "function", the aesthetic aspects of their overall composition were equally important. The exhibition will document this phase of the Bauhaus from 1930-1933 with items from all courses; it will show the differences to the preceding decade and illustrate the time with materials as various as press clippings and photographs. In the center of focus will be the large-size drawings from the architecture classes with their exquisite presentation technique.

Mostly because of its furniture the "Bauhaus" has become a synonym for modern design. A lot of it which belonged formerly to the avantgarde now belongs to everyday living in houses and offiices. Since long Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe are known as classics of he 20th century. But often it is not seen that some of the most popular creations have not been designed by bauhaus artists but as personal creations outside of the bauhaus. At this point our exhibition begins: we try to look behind the legend and we will show numerous examples which in fact have come into being within the Bauhaus and in connection with it. We will show chairs, tables, beds and wardrobes made by designers and architects of the bauhaus. Constructions of wood and steel and experiments with bended plywood are shown as well as coloured surfaces and fabric covers, highlights was well as unknown examples. For the nearly 200 examples the whole space of the museum will be used. The exhibition is based on a collection of the bauhaus-archive which was put together within 40 years. Some of the pieces will be shown for the first time. Additionally the bauhaus will receive important lendings of the collections from Weimar and Dessau as well as from public and private collections from Europe and the US.

Con "Techne 02 - Viaggio nel mondo dell’interattività" esploriamo le più avanzate forme di contaminazione tra arte e tecnologia. Caratteristica fondamentale dell’arte interattiva è la presenza indispensabile dello spettatore, non come fruitore passivo, ma come co-autore della creazione artistica che assume così anche una valenza ludica.

Praised for Villa VPRO in Hilversum and renowned for their Expo Pavilion design in Hannover, MVRDV are now making history with their Silodam residential building in Amsterdam and their design for the Brabant Library in Eindhoven. The architects of the Rotterdam firm MVRDV is synonymous with experimental architecture in the Netherlands. With their original ideas on density and free space in a crowded country, and by using key terms like compactness and artificial nature, the architects of MVRDV are making a significant contribution to the renewal of architecture in the Netherlands and abroad. The MVRDV exhibition presents nine key projects from the period 1997-2002 which form a good illustration of the firm's design philosophy. These projects are all very different, and include an office block, a broadcasting studio, a museum and a residential building. Two characteristic themes appear in all nine projects: the building as a hungry box, and the endless interior.

In Spring 2002, Rice Gallery invited Japanese architect Shigeru Ban to create a site-specific installation. Ban's new work, Bamboo Roof is an outdoor installation featuring an expansive open-weave canopy of bamboo flooring boards that spans the Gallery Plaza. It is characterized by a free-form roof structure with limitless geometric possibilities. The concept is at once simple and complex. It is created by a system of interlocking units, each consisting of four bamboo boards and four connection points. Although roofs are usually thought of as being solid, Bamboo Roof conveys a sense of lightness and transparency. Held aloft by bundles of steel poles that connect with the roof at numerous points, the effect is that of being under a forest canopy.

Hutte, abri, cabanon, containeur, robinsonnade, baraque, appentis, remise, bicoque… les termes ne manquent pas pour désigner les multiples variations de la cabane. : cabane du pêcheur, du jardinier, du peintre, du poète, pour la sieste, de l’ermite, pour prendre le thé… Elle offre à son occupant un abri mono-fonctionnel et surtout une évasion du quotidien, un repli sur soi, un moment de rêve, une échappée dans l’imaginaire. Les écrivains ou les enfants l’ont compris, eux qui créent des cabanes fantastiques pour des aventuriers extraordinaires ou bien des occupants hors du commun. La cabane est aussi un sujet à part entière dans l’histoire de l’architecture, du XVIIIe siècle, – l’Abbé Laugier la considérait comme l’origine de l’architecture – à aujourd’hui. Mais aujourd’hui, à quelle cabane rêvent les enfants ? Quels sont les nouveaux contextes où la construire ? Quels sont les matériaux de la cabane du XXIe siècle ? Quelle forme lui donner ? L’icône habituelle symbolisant l’abri, ou bien une géométrie plus complexe ? Plus qu’un simple rêve, la cabane est une aventure à construire. Pour l’architecte, l’artiste ou l’enfant, elle est un modèle de pédagogie. Elle offre, au-delà du plaisir de la réalisation, la possibilité d’approfondir une réflexion, le croisement de l’art et de la technique, de la théorie et de la pratique. Lancé en novembre 2001 et réalisé pendant l’année scolaire 2001/2002, le projet “Cabanes. Construis ton aventure !” s’est inscrit dans une démarche de sensibilisation à l’architecture des enfants des écoles maternelles et élémentaires. [...]

Dans une relation sans cesse changeante avec les centres de la culture européenne comme Vienne, Berlin, Paris ou Moscou, mais aussi avec l'Amérique, la culture architecturale tchèque a produit à partir de 1918, de Prague à Brno et à Zlín, des bâtiments originaux, et qui se mesurent avec les plus iconiques des réalisations du mouvement moderne. Après 1945, le “réalisme socialiste” n'est resté qu'un épisode éphémère, et une architecture moderne de bonne facture a survécu, que les projets élégants et radicaux techniquement du Stavoprojekt Liberec ont renouvelé dans les années 1970-1980. Recherches et chantiers foisonnent aujourd'hui et les démarches des architectes présentés à l'Ifa font apparaître les facettes d'une culture architecturale en plein développement. Sensibles à la sédimentation historique qui caractérise les paysages urbains tchèques, attentives à la qualité des techniques dans la plus ancienne société industrielle d'Europe, leurs architectures révèlent aussi un incontestable potentiel poétique. L’exposition présente projets et réalisations de 14 architectes – photographies, maquettes, portfolios, un reportage vidéo réalisé pour l’exposition présente leur démarche et 10 vidéos l’architecture du xxe siècle en République tchèque – et quelques pièces de mobilier du designer Rudolf Netik.

José Antonio Coderch de Sentmenat (1913-1984) è una delle figure più significative dell’architettura spagnola contemporanea. Una figura laterale, al margine delle grandi correnti dell’architettura moderna del secondo dopoguerra, il cui lavoro, meticoloso e paziente, portato avanti con coerenza nel tempo, attento agli stimoli della contemporaneità ma anche alla tradizione della disciplina, si distingue per la ricchezza dei risultati raggiunti e la profondità del pensiero teorico che lo accompagna. La mostra promossa dal Col.legi d’Arquitectes de Catalunya e dal Ministerio de Fomento e curata da A. Pizza e J.M. Rovira costruisce una retrospettiva delle opere progettate dell’architetto tra il 1940 e il 1964, evidenziando un percorso evolutivo complesso e per molti aspetti ancora da scoprire. Sono esposti più di sessanta lavori, presentati attraverso riproduzioni di schizzi, disegni e fotografie, accompagnati da pannelli esplicativi che evidenziano i passaggi più importanti della riflessione di Coderch sul progetto e sull’architettura. Il Catalogo spagnolo edito da Actar (Barcelona 2000) è disponibile anche, in versione ridotta, in italiano (Mandragora, Firenze 2002).

For more then thirty years the fascinating city of Seville has been the basis for the architectural work of Antonio Cruz and Antonio Ortiz, praised far beyond the boundaries of Spain. Nevertheless their work will be shown in Germany for the first time. For the presentation of their eighteen most important buildings and projects of the last ten years an exhibition system has been developed to fit to the given space of the Aedes East. On six narrow 'tables' - drawings and pictures layed in - wooden models of buildings and projects will be presented, corresponding to the artisan precision of the real architecture of Cruz y Ortiz. Mario Radice è uno dei maggiori artisti italiani del '900 e uno dei pochi che in Italia, in epoca storica, abbia operato nel campo dell'astrazione di carattere geometrico. La mostra evidenzia, oltre alla fondamentale collaborazione con Terragni, l'iniziale rapporto con Kandisnky, con Ozenfant e le Corbusier e quindi col neoplasticismo olandese. La rassegna è ripartita in due sedi, il Salone del Broletto e la Sala del Direttorio della Casa del Fascio. Nella Casa del Fascio sono raccolti progetti e studi condotti da Radice in vista della realizzazione delle pitture murali per il Salone delle adunate e la Sala del Direttorio - intervento distrutto dopo la guerra, ma che, nell'occasione, viene pure riproposto mediante ricostruzioni fotografiche - per ricordare come proprio a Como e in questo edificio-simbolo del razionalismo architettonico il rapporto tra pittura astratta e architettura abbia avuto l'unico esempio di pratica applicazione nel nostro paese. Nel Salone del Broletto, appena restaurato, è proposta invece un'antologia della produzione del maestro, partendo dalle opere figurative dei primissimi anni Trenta per poi seguire nel tempo la maturazione e l'evoluzione della sua pittura astratta fino agli anni Settanta.

Dopo "Mahakumbhmela" (2001)e "Global Box" (1999), Armin Linke presenta un nuovo progetto presso la galleria Marabini con una serie di lavori inediti: due fotografie di grande formato della serie "North Pole" (2002) e un' installazione formata da nove ruote di polistirolo, di diverse dimensioni, su cui sono applicate fotografie di Linke tratte dal suo immenso archivio di immagini (oltre 30.000) realizzate nel corso dei suoi numerosi viaggi in tutte le aree del pianeta. Le ruote invitano all'interazione lo spettatore che può ruotarle a piacimento come ideali rulli cinematografici. L'installazione è realizzata in collaborazione con il laboratorio di arte urbana Stalker, soggetto collettivo composto da artisti e architetti, finalizzato all'intervento su territori di margine, nonché volto alla creazione di una nuova forma di spazio pubblico contemporaneo.

Classe 1913, Luigi Caccia Dominioni è uno dei più brillanti e maturi architetti della seconda generazione. Protagonista appartato della scena architettonica sin dagli anni della ricostruzione, Caccia Dominioni si è qualificato come uno dei più sensibili interpreti dell’arte del costruire come artigianato “virtuoso”, elaborando nel tempo una sorta di “stil novo” capace di riecheggiare sonorità e timbri di un’idealizzata lingua lombarda. La mostra, curata da Fulvio Irace e Paola Marini, si colloca all'interno di una consolidata attenzione nei confronti dell’architettura contemporanea da parte del Museo di Castelvecchio (come testimonia anche la mostra dedicata, nel 2000, a Carlo Scarpa) e si propone di presentare una panoramica antologica sull'opera di Luigi Caccia Dominioni -che a Verona ha realizzato importanti lavori- prendendo in esame i due aspetti salienti della sua attività: quello di architetto e quello di designer.

Questa mostra vuole esporre in modo ampio e articolato la ricerca volta al riutilizzo della materia di scarto o all’uso non convenzionale di materiali cosiddetti poveri (carta, cartone, plastica, ecc.). Il tema proposto è quello della casa per cui viene ricreato in mostra un ambiente domestico concepito in modo da rendere possibile anche l’utilizzo concreto degli oggetti esposti. Ai nomi consolidati si affiancano giovani designer, italiani e stranieri. Oltre ai prototipi creati per l’occasione, saranno esposte alcune realizzazioni già presenti sul mercato. Inoltre, dialogando sull’ambigua linea di confine che divide arte e design, sono ospitati alcuni artisti italiani e stranieri, che attraverso le loro opere propongono punti di vista inconsueti rispetto al medium utilizzato.

This definitive retrospective of his career in Europe - the first in the UK - brings together 38 pivotal projects dating from Mies' arrival in Berlin in 1905 to his departure for the US in 1938. Featuring elegant villas, prototype skyscrapers and his remarkable German Pavilion for the Barcelona International Exposition, the exhibition also includes the work of modern masters and contemporary artists inspired by the architecture of Mies. The exhibition re-evaluates the importance of his early to mid career, revealing the architect as a shaper of the bustling metropolis and its emerging suburbs. Projects are explored through drawings, photographs, models and videos and are presented in two chronological paths which juxtapose Mies' suburban projects with those designed for the urban environment. The show also includes works by Peter Behrens, Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Frank Lloyd Wright - architects who deeply influenced Mies' vision. Testifying to his importance for artists today are a group of remarkable photographs by German artist Thomas Ruff, whose images of Mies' buildings provide a contemporary re-interpretation of his enduring legacy.

Presentata a Venezia al Padiglione Italia nell’ambito della XVIII Biennale di Architettura, approda a Roma la mostra “I disegni di Carlo Scarpa per la Biennale di Venezia”, allestita nella Sala delle due Colonne del Centro nazionale per le arti contemporanee. La mostra presenta opere e progetti commissionati all’ artista dalla Biennale di Venezia tra il 1948 e il 1968, con una significativa selezione di 36 disegni originali, molti dei quali ancora inediti. Completano l’esposizione un documentario realizzato con materiali audiovisivi tratti dall’archivio Carlo Scarpa e dalle Teche Rai, e una ricchissima scelta di immagini d’epoca degli straordinari allestimenti per i Padiglioni della Biennale.

The Hageneiland Housing Project, Ypenburg have been selected as the best project in the Netherlands by an architect under 40 years old. The project, by the Rotterdam architecture firm MVRDV is thus the winner of the prestigious NAI Award 2002. The winning project is currently on display, together with the four other nominated projects, in the entrance hall of the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI). For the winning project, MVRDV designed a neighbourhood of highly archetypical houses, which differ from each other only in their cladding material. The latter includes wooden shingles, zinc, aluminium and earthenware tiles in various colours. Residential footpaths where children can play thread between the houses. The public roads run along the margin of the development. An important quality of the project is the ingenious urban design of its layout. MVRDV's Hageneiland housing project demonstrates how variety can be achieved despite tight restrictions. A varied layout is produced by dividing up the project site into plots which deviate from straight lines. The outcome is a village-like neighbourhood.

The commercialisation of city centres has resulted in an increased privatisation of the public space. Current urban planning is increasingly resorting to programmatic events and entertainment - questions regarding urban infrastructure and comprehensive structural concepts are being replaced by a tendency towards disneyfication. The centre of the city becomes a theme park where urban settings are being produced according to commercial and tourist criteria. The exhibition project deals with contemporary changes in the urban field and analyses it from a scientific and an artistic point of view.
